After Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Post-operative Instructions

Please read these instructions carefully as they provide answers to questions you will have about what to expect after surgery. The success of your surgery depends on your completion of the postoperative instructions described below

What to Expect After Endoscopic Sinus Surgery:

Bleeding: It is normal to have some bleeding after sinus surgery. You can expect some bloody discharge for the first 3 to 5 days after surgery, especially after you irrigate your sinuses. If steady bleeding occurs after surgery, tilt your head back slightly and breathe through your nose gently. You may dab your nose with tissue but avoid any nose blowing. If this does not stop the bleeding you may use Afrin nasal spray. Several sprays will usually stop any bleeding. If Afrin fails to stop steady nasal bleeding than you should call our office or the on call doctor (see contact below).

Pain: You should expect some nasal and sinus pressure and pain for the first several days after surgery. This may feel like a sinus infection or a dull ache in your sinuses You will have a prescription for a postoperative pain medication to take after surgery. If you prefer a non-narcotic medication,extra-strength Tylenol is safe and works well. You should avoid aspirin and NSAIDs such as Motrin, Advil, and Aleve (see below).

Fatigue: You can expect to feel very tired for the first week after surgery.
This is normal and most patients plan on taking at least 1 week off of work to recover. Every patient is different and some return to work sooner.

Nasal congestion and discharge: You will have nasal congestion and discharge for the first few weeks after surgery. Your nasal passage and breathing should return to normal 2-3 weeks after surgery.

About Post-Operative Care Visits

Post-operative office visits are an indispensable part of the surgery, since they help promote healing and prevent persistent or recurrent disease. During these visits, the surgical cavity is cleaned and inspected. Early scar tissue may be removed, and the medical treatment strategy will be adjusted. Your first post-operative visit will occur typically within the first week after surgery, and you should expect 2 post-operative visits within the first 2-3 weeks after surgery. Consent for surgery includes consent for post-operative care, since the surgery and post-operative care are so closely related.
Failure to follow the postop care regimen can adversely affect the outcome of the surgery.

Important Instructions for the Post-Operative Period

  1. Start your nasal irrigations on the day after surgery. You will be given instructions on how to perform the irrigations.
  2. Do not blow your nose for two weeks after surgery. (Occasionally, you will be given instructions not to blow your nose for longer periods of time.)
  3. Do not bend, lift or strain for two weeks after surgery. These activities will promote bleeding from your nose. You should not participate in rigorous activity until healing is completed.
  4. Do not suppress the need to cough or sneeze; instead, cough or sneeze with your mouth open.
  5. Do not take aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, naproxen, Advil, others) for a full 7-10 days after surgery.
  6. Take your prescribed antibiotics as directed by your physician.

If you are taking blood-thinning drugs (Coumadin, Plavix) on the recommendation of a physician, please ask your physician about the best time to resume these medications.

In general, you may resume other medications on the day after surgery. If you have any questions, please ask your physician.

Please call us immediately if you note fever(temperature above 38o C) ,clear watery drainage from your nose, changes in your vision, eye swelling, worsening headache and/or neck stiffness.
